St. Barnabas Beginnings
In 1963, some Louisiana Episcopalians saw the need for a second Parish in southwest Lafayette. They formed plans with help from the Rector of The Church of The Ascension, and began holding services at the L.J. Alleman Elementary School.
In 1964, the St. Barnabas mission was approved. Construction began on a new church complex including a Commons Room, kitchen, offices and classrooms. The first service was conducted the following year. St. Barnabas became a Parish in 1968. In 1981, parishioners broke ground for a new nave that was dedicated on the eve of the feast of St. Barnabas in 1982.
We begin counting our St. Barnabas founding and “birthday,” from 1963, as parishioners did when they celebrated St. Barnabas’ Silver Anniversary in 1988.

St. Barnabas Today
We are a vibrant, medium-sized congregation—small enough to feel like family, yet large enough to offer enriching programs for all ages. For adults, we provide Christian formation, Bible studies, ministries, choir, and numerous fellowship groups.
For children and youth, we provide a variety of programs including Little Lambs / Mother’s Day Out, Children’s Chapel, Episcopal Youth Community (EYC), and Camp Hardtner. Our youth also serve on the altar, building a foundation of faith from a young age.
Statement of Inclusivity
We are committed to honoring our baptismal vow to respect the dignity of every human being. Rooted in Christ’s love, we welcome everyone into the life of our church, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, ability, or economic status.
In our worship, fellowship, and community life, we celebrate the diversity of God’s creation and believe that each person brings unique gifts to the table. As a church, we strive to create an inclusive space where each person can feel seen, heard, and valued.
At St. Barnabas, all are welcome—not just to participate, but to fully belong.
